The main job opportunity is an engineer in a petroleum refinery. There are a number of Private as well as Government refineries. One may apply for the post of an Engineer after graduation. Some big Petroleum Refineries in India are- Reliance Refinery (Jamnagar), Essar (Jamnagar), Cochin Refinery etc. One may also become an Engineer in Government enterprises such as ONGC and OIL!
Crude oil exploration and extraction business sector is also one such field where graduates may find jobs. One may also get work in consultation business also, which deals with oil and natural gas as well as petroleum resources.

Yes definitely if you are doing petroleum engineering from UPES you are always in demand. It is one of the best college for petroleum engineering.

Placements are decent in UPES. It's not very different from the placements from other colleges. However, a lot of people in the college do get in the core companies which is a good thing.
As far as the petroleum placements are concerned, the average placements packages are more or less similar to other branches, however there is a chances you can secure a very high package provided to intern at a core company like Schlumberger or Cairn India. A lot depends on your GPA if you are in Petroleum engineering in UPES.
