VFX is much in use these days and is surely going to remain a lead requirement and part of the screen works in electronic media, films etc. There are two options that your son can keep for a career in VFX- one is to Do private level courses from academies that won't provide degree of a recognised university and the second option is to go for a graduation in Graphic, Animation and associated VFX domain. Hyderabad, Mumbai are leading places for such courses. AAFT, Symbiosis, ARENA, and many more offer B.Sc. Animation and Visual Effects etc. The basic qualification is 12th and his being from Science won't matter. He is eligible.

You have chosen fields that are fast evolving and are likely to grow very fast in the coming decade. Both are available at Bachelor level so you can do a B. Des in either transportation design or Animation & gaming design. Transportation is a wider and better choice then only automobile design. Similarly VFX is a small subset of animation and gaming. So go for courses with wider scope and go for specialised universities only. Would offers both programs which you can check on its website.

Animation is an art form and a very demanding career. It has ample opportunities for the creatively talented people. Opportunities lie in animation design, game design, graphics, storyboarding, 3d modelling, texturing and lighting, Dynamics and VFX and of course animation (2D and 3D). However, choosing between these must be done after seeing your performance in each of these. So going for a generic course covering all or most of these would be the best way to get started in these careers. Typically you should have good sketching skills to be able to make a sound career in this (if you work hard you can improve your drawing skills trem

B.Sc animation and VFX are 3 years' duration courses.
Bachelor of Design (B.Des) course in animation is a 4-year course. The four years course includes 2D, 3D, VFX, etc. The difference between the two degrees is that the B.Des course is not only 1 year more but offers usually an international syllabus, which is completely focused on Animation only. Few of the top colleges are Artemisia College of Art & Design, MIT, Pune, NID, Ahmedabad (the top in the country), etc.
While selecting college, consider factors such as the fee, whether the faculty has animation industry experience or not, whether the college has facilities such as its own
