Animation is an art form and a very demanding career. It has ample opportunities for the creatively talented people. Opportunities lie in animation design, game design, graphics, storyboarding, 3d modelling, texturing and lighting, Dynamics and VFX and of course animation (2D and 3D). However, choosing between these must be done after seeing your performance in each of these. So going for a generic course covering all or most of these would be the best way to get started in these careers. Typically you should have good sketching skills to be able to make a sound career in this (if you work hard you can improve your drawing skills tremendously). Nothing but your innermost talent and passion should lead you to the course and the institute you choose. B.Sc animation and VFX are 3 years' duration courses.
Bachelor of Design (B.Des) course in animation is a 4-year course. The four years course includes 2D, 3D, VFX, etc. The difference between the two degrees is that the B.Des course is not only 1 year more but offers usually an international syllabus, which is completely focused on Animation only. Few of the top colleges are Artemisia College of Art & Design, MIT, Pune, NID, Ahmedabad (the top in the country), etc.
While selecting college, consider factors such as the fee, whether the faculty has animation industry experience or not, whether the college has facilities such as its own animation production studio, whether the college teaches classical animation (base of all kind of animation) or not, etc. availability of equipment such as Light boxes, etc. should be there.
