The West Virginia University ranks #158 at the national level as per Shiksha Rankings. Another major source ranks it #220 as part of its National Universities Rankings for 2025, while it secures a global university rank of #1001 as per Global Universities Rankings 2025 published by another major ranking platform.

Though, there is no clarity about the institution's tier level, its research department is certainly among the best in the United States, as it maintains its standing as an R1 institution as per a media release posted in February.

R1 universities are known for a high volume of research activity & expenditure. The institute granted more than 200 doctoral degrees & spent over USD 246 million on research based activity in the year 2023, of which USD 100 million came from federal agencies.

WVU secures a rank of #158 among all US based higher educational institutions, as part of Shiksha Popularity Rankings 2025, while another popular university ranking source, ranks it #1001 globally as part of its World University Rankings 2025.

Another ranking platform ranks it #220 for its 2025 rankings of National Universities in the United States.
