We help our students to find jobs too
Hollywood films like Avatar have helped make animation popular among youngsters. According to Aruna Kumar, vice president and zonal head (South), Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics (MAAC), all it takes is passion and creativity to excel in the field of animation. The advanced diploma in 3D animation (AD3D) is the institute’s flagship course, which is certified and validated by the Cambridge University. Kumar spoke to DNA about the course structure and career opportunities.
How is the course structured?
This is an 18-month course and can be taken by anyone from a fresher to a working professional. The only qualification required to join the course is PUC. It is a part time course and is conducted from Monday to Friday for two hours at the MAAC centres. We conduct an aptitude test to evaluate applicants’ interest and capability. The course is spread across three semesters, of six months each. We cover aspects like digital film-making, 3D and computer graphics. Students have to choose an elective during one semester based on his/her interest from five categories including modelling, lighting, rigging, animation and visual effects. The students have to clear the Cambridge University tests administered in-house.
What are the career options for your students?
We assist the students in getting placements prior to the completion of the course. We give in-house training to help them develop portfolios and face interviews. There is a range of industries where students can find employment opportunities from education to gaming, television and films. The advertising industry uses special effects and animation a lot. Apart from this, titling and content-related work is plenty in the visual media. We get requests from companies to send students for internships.
What is the infrastructure provided at the MAAC centres to pursue this course?
Depending on the size of the centre and the batch, we have adequate infrastructure. For instance, the Koramangla branch has close to 40 high-end computers, whereas the Jayanagar and Banashankari centres have over 23 computers. We also have audio-visual labs in all centres.
Could you elaborate on the fee structure for the AD3D courses?
The entire course fee is Rs1,80,000. Banks like HDFC and Punjab National Bank offer educational loans for our students. We also provide the facility of making payments in installments.
How is the animation course perceived among students?
The awareness about animation as a course and a career option is increasing among students. When they apply for the course, students ask if they can do what they see on-screen themselves after pursuing the AD3D course. The enquiries are also about whether they need a background in science or mathematics. That’s not a necessity, as all they need is passion and creativity.
