During his visit to Punjab Engineering College, President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate three projects – semi-conductor research lab, the community centre and the “Century Gate”.
President Ram Nath Kovind will visit Punjab Engineering College (PEC) on November 16 for the 100th Foundation Year celebrations of the institute. The PEC administration has received the green signal from Rashtrapati Bhavan in this regard. As per a report published in Times of India, the office of the President issued a verbal communication conveying its acceptance of the invitation of the PEC administration. The campus is now abuzz with preparations for the President’s visit, during which he will inaugurate three projects. He will inaugurate the semi-conductor research lab, the community centre and the “Century Gate”. He is also likely to lay the foundation stone of a boys hostel.
The President will be accompanied by governors of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal as well as chief ministers of the three states. He will visit PEC for about an hour. However, the PEC administration has not finalised a programme yet.
Apart from officials of the UT administration, invitations will also be sent to vice-chancellors and directors of several universities in the Northern region and other major institutes, including Panjab University.
Alumni of only 1943 btach to be part of event
Only around 400 selected guests will participate in the PEC centennial year event. PEC alumni who received their degrees in 1943 will be honoured on the occasion. A special hall will be prepared for the event at the PEC football ground, the report added.
From Pakistan to Chandigarh
First set up in Lahore and named Mughalpura Engineering College, the institute was re-established as East Punjab Engineering College on the campus of Thomson Engineering College, Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) after Partition. Renamed Punjab Engineering College in 1950 it was later shifted to Chandigarh in 1953.
With the formation of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, the college came under the control of the Government of India through the Chandigarh administration in 1966.
