Rigorous Training Required for Pilots
I am a Class 12 student. I want to become a pilot. The institute is going to provide me only 250 hours (of training) abroad. After doing the instructor's course, it will be 350 hours whereas to get a job in an airline, we require at least 2000 hours. Where should I get these many of hours from? - Sahil.
From time to time and depending on the requirements, Air India and some private airlines take trained pilots with commercial pilot's licences and a minimum of 250-200 hours of flying experience as trainee pilots. Further training is imparted at the respective airline's training centre. Pilots are put through rigorous technical training on the airline's various aircraft.
Most private carriers expect candidates to pay for the training and endorsement costs which for different aircraft, including the Airbus 320 and Boeing 747, can be extremely expensive and range from R15 lakh to R25 lakh.
After the necessary endorsement, commercial pilots are confirmed in the job and paid handsomely.
However, with a slump in the economy and rising fuel prices, most airlines have cut back on expansion plans. Though many airlines have not retrenched pilots, they are shelving recruitment plans. As a result, very few pilots have been hired in the last six months and roughly 1,500 trainee pilots are awaiting absorption in India. Given this scenario, you may like to reconsider your goal to become a pilot.
I want to do an MBA programme but most institutes provide PG diplomas in business management. If I want to for an MPhil or PhD, then will this PGDBM be applicable as equivalent to a master's degree? - Ayush.
The difference between an MBA and a PGDBM is that an MBA is a master's degree, offered only by universities. The PGDBM is a diploma programme offered by institutes not affiliated to any university. Although the degree programme tends to be more academic in content and structure than the diploma, there is not much difference between MBA and PGDBM in most institutes.
If you are interested in an academia and wish to study further for an MPhil or PhD, it may be better for you to do an MS or MA in business administration offered by many universities. The MPhil or PhD is the preferred option for a career in academic areas like teaching.
The MBA is a professional qualification, best suited for an administrative or management career in a corporate or government organisation. Decide on the study course keeping in mind the career you wish to pursue.
I am a journalist, looking for a part-time one-year BEd programme. How is (Maharshi Dayanand University, MDU) Rohtak's BEd programme? Can you please throw some light on an internationally-recognised course as I plan to go abroad? - Sandhya.
The BEd or Bachelor of Teaching (BT) is a one-year degree programme that qualifies candidates to teach secondary and senior secondary classes. The programme is available at almost every university and several colleges. Admission is through a test followed by an interview. As it requires practical work, the distance-mode BEd programme is only for in-service teachers and those with at least two years of full-time regular teaching experience in a primary, secondary, higher or senior secondary school recognised by the Central or state governments.
MDU's BEd is exclusively for in-service regular school teachers working within Haryana. The applicant should have a graduate/ postgraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university.
Other universities offering BEd through distance education include:
- IGNOU
- Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University
- Nalanda Open University
- Kakatiya University, Warangal
If you do not have time for full-time study or work as a teacher, then I don't suggest you take up teaching as a career. Since you are a journalist, you could look at a PG diploma in mass communication, or think about a career you would like to pursue for the next 20 to 30 years. Moreover, it is difficult to land jobs abroad, particularly in the recenssion-hit United States and Europe, and do not offer jobs to foreigners, except those with very specialised skills.
