Robots have never failed to fascinate human beings and the science of creating robots or related functions/devices is called robotics.

According to the International Standard Organization, a robot is an automatically controlled reprogrammable, multipurpose manifestative machine, with or without locomotion, for use in industrial automation applications. Robotics deals with the modeling, designing, planning, and controlling of robot systems.

Robotics brings together the expertise from different disciplines such as electronics, hardware design, algorithms and computer science along with other areas. In India, robotic science is in its early days.

In India, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Department of Scientific and Industrial Research conducts the studies related to the robot technology. This program imparts the working knowledge of methods for design and analysis of robotic and intelligent systems. Students are being provided with the conceptual knowledge of Electro Mechanics, Robotics Sensors & Instrumentation, Robotics Fabrication, Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Vision.

A robotics professional can use his knowledge in various fields such as nano-technology, surgery, modern warfare and space-exploration.

Eligibility

Undergraduate programs:

To be eligible for an undergraduate degree, one should have passed 10+2 with science subject such as biology, maths and chemistry

Postgraduate programs:

To be eligible for a master's degree, one should have completed its bachelor's degree in (B.E/B.Tech) or any other equivalent branches of engineering.

If you are a mechanical engineer, then you may like to make a move towards designing and control of robotics. If you have a B.tech degree in electronics then you can hop on to the control and hardware designing of robots. A computer design programmer can also choose hardware designing in robotics.

OR

Should be a B. Tech. / BE in Electronics / Mechanical / Electrical / Instrumentation & Control/ IT/CSE Engineering with minimum 60% marks

Career prospects

This field offers plenty opportunities in manufacturing, research and engineering, agriculture, mining, nuclear, power-plant maintenances. This field also offers a good career in the R&D of robotics, especially for qualified experts and researchers.

If you have an M.E degree in robotics then you can get employment opportunities in the space related organizations such as ISRO. The initial salary for a robotics professional starts from Rs 5-6 lakhs per annum.

Some of the important roles one can perform in an organization are:

  • Robotics Technicians
  • Robotics Test Engineers
  • Robotics System Engineer
  • Senior Robotics Specialist
  • Trainers
  • Analysts
  • Researcher
  • Supervisors
