The university does not restrict admittance to those with an engineering degree and supports diversity within its student group. We invite applications from students with a variety of academic backgrounds, including commerce, science, and the humanities. For example, applicants from different fields are welcome to apply to the flagship course, the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Industrial Management. A comprehensive assessment based on job experience, CAT results, academic standing, and in-person interviews is part of the selection process. The cost of the programme is about 12.5 Lacs Indian rupees. In the classroom, this inclusive approach fosters broader viewpoints and creative thinking by ensuring a rich and diverse learning environment.

IIM Mumbai is frequently listed as one of India's best B-schools. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings for 2022, IIM Mumbai is placed ninth out of all management institutes in India. INR 51 LPA was the highest compensation offered during the IIM Mumbai placements of 2023–2024, and INR 31 LPA was the average package. According to student reviews on the Shiksha website at IIM Mumbai, there aren't any such drawbacks mentioned.

According to the Times Higher Education 2023 Impact ranking, the college is ranked between 400 and 600. Students can enrol in PG programmes at IIM Mumbai in addition to other courses. The college offers full-time residential curricula for all of its offerings.
