IIM Mumbai offers financial assistance to meritorious students. The scholarships are disbursed under the following schemes:
- GATE-qualified candidates are entitled to Teaching Assistantship (at present INR 12,400 per month) and contingency expenditure as per rules.
- SC/ST candidates are granted Central Sector Scholarship as per the scheme of Govt. of India subject to the satisfactory fulfilment of terms and conditions mentioned therein.
- 30% waiver of tuition fee: Any student entering the postgraduate programme whose total family income does not exceed INR 2.50 lakh in the last financial year shall be eligible for this scholarship.
- 50% waiver of tuition fee: Any student entering the postgraduate programme whose total family income does not exceed INR 1 lakh in the last financial year shall be eligible for this scholarship.

Stay in hostels is not mandatory in IIM Mumbai. It's depends on you if you don't want to take hostel, then you can live outside but I think in IIM Mumbai, for some courses like PGDIE, PGDIM hostels are compulsory.
