122 private engineering colleges opt for progressive closure
Failing to survive, a total of 122 private engineering colleges in Maharashtra, Haryana and Gujarat have opted for “progressive closure” in the previous year. As per the statistical reports available with AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education), a total of 23 private engineering colleges in Jalgaon, Aurangabad and Kolhapur including other areas in the state of Maharashtra closed down in 2016.
Colleges opt for progressive closure when they face difficulties in survival and wish to discontinue with its educational services. In this case, the institution is no more allowed to admit new students. However, the already existing students can complete their courses; after which the institute is likely to shut down.
It is assumed that the reason behind the cap in the count of students is their waned interest towards technical education which makes it quite impossible for the college authorities to meet their operative cost.
An AICTE official expressed his thoughts over the closure, saying that the best lot of intellectual students who aim to pursue technical education, seek for admission to IITs, NITs or other top engineering colleges. Whilst the rest who do not qualify for the prime institutes, settle for other private colleges. But the count of these students is very low, which thus becomes the reason for lower number of enrollments in these private colleges that other students left if the fray settle for.
If the latest information is to be believed, around 75 engineering colleges from various states, including 15 in Gujrat, 7 in Telangana, 11 in Karnataka, 11, in Rajasthan, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, 6 in Punjab and 13 in Haryana, closed down during this period.
