Accreditation mandatory for Higher Educational Institutions by 2015
All higher education institutes need to get University Grants Commission (UGC) accreditation by June 1, 2015. Failure to comply with the same will result in discontinuation of all financial aid received by the institute from UGC.
In January 2013, UGC issued a ‘Mandatory Assessment and Accreditation of higher Educational Institutions’ which stated that it is “mandatory for each Higher Educational Institution to get accredited by the Accreditation Agency after passing out of two batches or six years, whichever is earlier.”
An accreditation is usually valid for five years. Universities need to reapply six months before the accreditation expires. Failure to comply with the provisions will lead to penalties such as
- Repeal of the notification in respect of such Higher Educational Institution from the list of Higher Educational institutions,
- Revoking it’s university status
- Withholding of all grants
- Declaring the institute ineligible for consideration for any assistance.
Various universities and institutes depend on UGC support for their regular functioning. According to sources, more 470 institutes are yet to be accredited. As per a report published on The Economic Times, “According to HRD Ministry officials, 133 universities are eligible for accreditation, of which 88 are state universities while seven are central ones. They said 22 deemed universities and 16 private universities are yet to apply for accreditation.”
