First Engineering College for the Blind to come up in Hyderabad
“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Well! The Devnar Foundation for the blind has brought life to the above-mentioned saying with their initiative to give the world its very first engineering college for the blind.
Seeing eight students from the Devnar School for Blind securing admissions to mainstream colleges to pursue engineering, Devnar’s founder A Sai Baba Goud, came up with the thought to establish an engineering school for the blind.
While the Devnar foundation is all set with 20 different digital and Braille software and the initial funding arrangement, the search for the land to build the institute is still on.
The founder of Devnar Foundation emphasised on the fact that the visually impaired students are also brilliant and are equally talented with many of them clearing Chartered Accountancy tests.
He also said that getting an affiliation from Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University or BITS Pilani won’t be difficult.
Meanwhile the initiative gives hope to numerous blind children and their parents, as currently there is not even a single engineering college for the blind in the country. If all goes well this college, planned to come up in Hyderabad, will create history.
The Devnar School for Blind offers English medium education right from primary school up to intermediate. In 2001, it took the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country introducing computer training courses for the visually challenged with the help of special software.
Special software used at Devnar to impart Computer education to pupils from class 6 to class 10 includes:
JAWS: Job Access With Speech (JAWS) is a screen reading software. This software is specially developed for the visually challenged. It is based on Microsoft Windows operating system and useful for many Microsoft software products.
Kurzweil: Kurzweil is a software used for reading printed text. A scanner is used to scan the printed text.
Magic: Magic is the software used by a person with low vision. Here the text is magnified so that a person with low vision can see the text on the screen with the help of this software.
Low Vision Clinic: Low Vision Clinic enhances the learning abilities of the partially sighted children who use the zoom text on the monitor.
