For Career Orientation
Nestled amid sprawling bungalows in the swank Hauz Khas Enclave, the 48-year-old Institute of Home Economics is not as well known as other DU-affiliated colleges, but it has its strong points.
The reason for its lack of renown is the limited number of programmes it offers — just five at the undergraduate level — and its location, far from South Campus.
Students here, however, are convinced they have made the right choice. “The teachers are always here to help us,” says Smriti Tandon, third-year student of BSc home science (pass).
USP: It is only one among two Delhi University colleges offering all five specialisations in home science at the undergraduate level.
Programmes: BSc home science (pass); BSc home science (hons) with majors in food and nutrition, human development, fabric and apparel designing, resource management, and communication & extension; BSc (microbiology/ biochemistry); Bachelor of elementary education; MSc in food and nutrition or fabric and apparel science; PG diploma in dietetics and public health nutrition and PhD in home science.
Extra-curricular activities: The much-awaited annual cultural fest, Melange, takes place on December 21-24 this year. Apart from the dance, music and plays, the highlight will be the fashion show, Flames, featuring the students’ creations. The college is a member of SPICMACAY and has an active NSS wing.
Infrastructure: The library has 22,000 resource journals and books. The computer labs have about 40 sets with the latest software. An air-conditioned conference room hosts seminars / workshops.
Found on campus: “Though it’s a small college, we get all the facilities from hi-tech labs to a good library,” says Rupa Thakur, a third-year student of BSc home science.
