Future is not easy for Indian Universities
The most awaited foreign university bill was cleared by the Union Cabinet recently. Once the bill will turn into the actual law it will create competition to the national universities. If most of the top foreign universities will set up their shops in India than the Indian universities should have to pull up their socks if they want to really survive in the education market in future.
Presently, many Indian universities are not so flexible regarding their courses and their other norms. Many posts are laying vacant in
government and private universities and institutions. The students those who will get the opportunity to study in foreign university in native land will surely give preference to getting a foreign degree at an affordable price. The top foreign universities as per their proposal are in mood to offer professional and vocational courses to Indian students. Former Mumbai University vice chancellor Vijay Khole said, “The state must also take timely steps in sync with policies, otherwise it will lose out.”
Now the time has come for Indian universities to think over their education procedure and other things. They must evaluate all the pros and cons related to the future competitions. Indian Universities should also pay attention to the vacant seat for professor in their institutions. If foreign universities will establish their offices in India the teachers will get good opportunity and option to join these universities as it might be possible that they might get good salary and perks there.
The state of affairs at Mumbai University indicate makes it clear that it is not ready to cope with the challenge. “Simple practices, such as international affairs office, single-window clearance for foreign students, are not there. The fact that the university is yet to renew its accreditation speaks of the kind of quality control that is in place,” a faculty member said.
Devang Khakhar, IIT Bombay director, said ,“foreign universities were likely to impact faculty recruitment. “We recruit the best talent. So, we will be competing with foreign universities while trying to attract new talent.”
The experts are also worried over the present scenario and about the future as well. They think that with the establishment of central universities the state run universities has lost their charm among students. Same condition apply on professors also, they prefer to teach in central universities as compared to state universities. According to them they get better perks and better opportunities with them. Once the foreign universities establish their institutions in India they will give tough competition to Indian universities on all aspects be it teaching, faculty, infrastructure or courses. But one thing is sure that in that situation the students will get the best facilities and best study options to study in their own country.
