How '0' score can take you to Andhra colleges
Many SC/ST students get through, despite a Zero in EAMCET in Andhra Pradesh.
Unbelievable but true! Getting a zero in exam is no more a deterrent to get into Andhra colleges. Most of the students in Andhra Pradesh secured zero in EAMCET (Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test) and still they are eligible for admissions on the basis of scoring minimum 40 per cent marks in 10+2.
Some of the students have handed over their blank answer sheets but still eligible for admission into professional degree courses in Andhra Pradesh. Of 78 students, 22 scored zero in the entrance test but still they are eligible to get admission in engineering and agriculture courses because they belong to Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.
Nine students will get admission in engineering colleges, and rest can pursue other courses except MBBS. Such dalit/tribal students can obtain admissions in to agriculture, veterinary and horticulture courses.
Every year EAMCET is conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad for admission into engineering, medical, dental and agriculture courses both in government and private colleges in the state. Last week results for the same were announced. 90,917 students wrote the exam but only 83,686 managed to qualify the exam.
The competition is tough for general category students as only 4,950 seats available in 37 medical colleges and 1,870 seats in 21 dental colleges. 283,477 students sat for engineering entrance, of which only 223,886 have qualified the exam. This number has lowered down as 200,000 students did not pass the class 12th exam.
This year the state has 321,000 engineering seats which mean that about 1, 00,000 engineering seats would go vacant in the academic year 2012-13. Academicians predicted that the number of vacant seats can even go up as all the toppers will opt for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). (Read more)
Last year, a cutoff percentage was set by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) as per which securing 50% in class 12th was set for general category students and 40% for the reserved category students.
