I am a Class 11 student. I have done my International General Certificate of Secondary Education from Belgium, and have, thankfully, secured good grades. I plan to continue my education in India (which I do not know very much about). I wish to pursue a computer engineering degree. I would like to know the standing of various universities in India and how to apply to them. Are there any reputable private colleges that offer this discipline?

There are some excellent engineering colleges in India. You can check their recognition and accreditation through the websites of the University Grants Commission (www.ugc.ac.in) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (www.naac.gov.in) which provides the complete list of accredited institutions with their grades. This should reassure you about the standing and academic levels of each institute.

Practically all engineering institutes offer the computer engineering specialisation. Selection to an engineering programme - BE or BTech - is through a competitive entrance test. This includes the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination currently for 15 IITs, and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) for degree courses in different colleges and institutes, including some private institutes in India. The AIEEE is also valid for admission to the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs, www.iiit.ac.in) in Hyderabad, Allahabad, Pune, Bangalore and some other cities.

Some private institutes such as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (www.bits-pilani.ac.in), Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal (www.manipal.edu), Vellore Institute of Technology (www.vit.ac.in) and many others hold their own entrance tests.

Admission to a branch like computer engineering depends on your ranking in the entrance test and the seats available in the colleges for this specialisation. If you are a non-resident Indian, there is a special scheme which enables NRIs, persons of Indian origin (PIOs) and foreign nationals to apply for direct admission to undergraduate (UG) engineering programmes in India.

The Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme is coordinated by Educational Consultants India Ltd (EdCIL, www.edcilindia.co.in), a public sector enterprise under India's human resource development ministry. The admission is for UG programmes available at the 15 National Institutes of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering Colleges) and other centrally-funded institutions (other than the IITs) and Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

Under the DASA Scheme, admissions are offered to the above-mentioned group of applicants who have passed the senior secondary or any other examination equivalent to 12 years of schooling in India, and have aggregate marks of at least 60% or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.75 on a 10-point scale or equivalent grades in all the subjects of the qualifying examination. Indian nationals seeking admission should also have studied abroad for a minimum period of five years (including the qualifying examination, that is, Class 11 and Class 12) during the past eight years.
