IIT Bangalore Students deferred protests against New Admission Proposal
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) students have planned a chain of non-violent protests against the new admission proposal decided by the IIT Council's. Initially, boycott of classes have been planned for 23rd September, 2011 but now it has been postponed to 14th October, 2011.
IITians has developed a group called iitians.org on social networking site Facebook where it is spearheading the protest. To bring non-violent protests into action; the council has decided to approach the students of classes 11 and 12 from other colleges, professors and teachers to join the protest. The group was basically concerned about the quality of IITs that would have an adverse effect on the upcoming students and the new proposal would also lead to untested selection process.
Other IITs have not participated in the movement due to the fact that their examinations are on and their placement season is approaching. IIT Delhi has yet not registered for any official protest. IIT Students said that we will boycott classes and will not have mess food and will wear black shirts as part of the non-violent protests. The protests will continue until the necessary actions are made.
Scrapping of the IIT-JEE examination, having a common entrance test and giving equal weight to Class XII board examination results are all the much-debated proposals and which will be implemented from 2013-14. A student from IIT-Bombay said that such moves that have been introduced are definitely not the best one and every one is not interested in engineering. A special aptitude is the major requirement for getting into an IIT, which cannot be achieved merely by scoring good marks in Class XII.
Alumni's of IITs have also participated in the protests. The protest has been postponed to 14th October, 2011 as examinations are going on in other IITs. The protest is all about boycotting the classes but the classes can still be held in ground, labs; people can give exams, study for exams, and study outside class room. Council of students is writing mails to all professors, MP, MLAs, seniors, government.
Most of the students said that IIT-JEE is an application based exam in synchronization with engineering requirement, which gives 75 per cent weightage to XII exam and ultimately, it will impact the kind of intake of students. The inclusion of social science subjects like history, geography etc in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a move that is detested by students.
Some of the students said that including social sciences in IIT entrance is simply not a wise decision because for engineering exams, logical and analytical brains are required. Those who are interested in the social sciences can pursue it separately. He also stated that, Sibal is destroying the already institutionalized pattern of exam doing away with even the elite brilliant students.
