IIT-JEE likely to stay in 2013
The IIT senates are not in favour of allowing 40 per cent weightage to the XII board exam scores for the final selection of students to IITs. The debate took off following the government's proposal of holding a common entrance test for admissions to the country's centrally funded tech schools, replacing IIT-JEE and AIEEE from 2013 onwards. The proposal also suggested assigning 40 per cent weightage to the XII board exams to arrive at the final merit list.
According to the concerned IIT authorities, any changes at this stage would confuse students preparing for the exam under the existing system. In their opinion, any such major changes to the exam cannot be implemented from 2013.
The IIT faculty, open to considering the idea of the common entrance test, wants it to be used as a mere ‘filtering' exercise. Assuming that the students qualifying such a common test could be about five times the actual number of seats available for admission to IITs, they want to safeguard the identity of the IIT-JEE to remain as the qualifying exam. They even suggested an evolved pattern for the IIT-JEE moving from its present multiple-choice format to becoming a ‘thought-provoking and theoretical test'. Read more
Modifying its earlier view that the XII board marks should only remain as a eligibility criteria for students to appear for the entrance test (as is currently the case), the senate now suggests that the future IIT aspirants should not only qualify the government's proposed common entrance test but also secure around 80 per cent marks in their XII board exams. This they feel will encourage students to not neglect their Board exams while preparing for entrance tests. Read more
