IITs struggling over faculty, campus
Can you imagine the country's ‘premier institutes' like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) operating without a proper campus and just about half the faculty?
While shortage of teachers is not news anymore when it comes to most schools and colleges in the country, but it's hard to ignore when the case in point involves the likes of IITs and IISERs, normally expected to provide the best possible educational and research facilities to their students.
Showing concern over faculty shortage at these institutes, still operating out of temporary campuses, a parliamentary panel report has asked the HRD ministry to look into the matter.
It's a valid concern as the shortage of teachers is reported to be around 60% in some IITs. Around 90 vacancies are known to be created to meet the faculty requirements at the new IITs, still struggling to find suitable match. The positions require ‘qualified and experienced' faculties to meet IIT standards.
The new IITs launched between 2008 and 2010 are yet to settle down, and still operate from their temporary campuses. Reasons could vary from decisions over location of permanent campus or land allotment or commencement of construction work.
A similar plight is shared by five IISERs (in Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal and Thiruvanthapuram) and 10 new NITs stuck with temporary campuses. Read more
