IITs to offer online programs!
Your dream of studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) could just be a click away now! IITs are likely to start online certification program for engineering disciplines to fulfill the demand for more employable graduates for the IT industry.
The plan is to launch a certified programme in two major disciplines by 2013. Initially, IIT Madras will coordinate the programme, but all other IITs may also be interested to become partners. IT and industry partners will also be part of this programme.
To start with the program is likely to cater to two major areas of engineering – IT and computer science – and the initial topics for the certification programme would include programming, data structure and algorithms. Eventually, other engineering and science disciplines would also be covered.
A strong element of monitoring is expected to set the program apart from other online programs. Coordinator of NPTEL Mangala Sunder Krishnan said, " We are proposing centrally invigilated exams with IT partners lending support in the management and conduct of the programmes in a very direct way. Also we do not envisage any entrance criteria. We only want the applicant to have a professional degree or being a student of a higher education programme," reported Hindustan Times.
The proposed certification program finds its roots in the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) project launched a few years ago. Carried out by IITs and IISc, the project offered a plethora of courses online for students and teachers across the country by providing a new national curriculum.
There’s more good news as the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) will be launching an online certificate course in business management from January 2013. The six-month course is open to graduates from any discipline and students in their final year can also apply for the course. This program will be offered through a combination of both online and contact classes. The online classes will be conducted on WizIQ, which is a platform that helps universities and colleges across India to adopt ICT for blended/online/distance academic programs. The course is divided into three phases where the first and third phase will comprise of regular classes in the IITD Campus and the second phase will have online classes on the WizIQ platform.
