JEE Main 2014: How normal is the normalisation process?

JEE Main 2014 All India Ranks (AIRs) got declared on July 8, 2014 after a long and anxious wait by as many as 12.7 lakh students who took the exam this year. Rather than making students happy, the declaration has left the students, a large number of them, in a state of frustration and anger. Reason?  The very 'skewed' normalisation formula adopted for ranking which has again screwed the happiness of many.

Similar to the year 2013, this year too, results have shocked, surprised and left students in a dilemma. Not only has the system confused students but it also has made things way messy for them to even understand it. Reacting on this, a student said, “By the looks of it, it seems that even the folks at CBSE do not fully understand the system. But, this doesn’t come as surprise for us for this is not first time these people are talking about things they have no clue of.”

The twisted process was introduced last year and it was decided, that the declaration of JEE Main ranking will be based on two parts:

1JEE Main marks (60%)

2. Board Marks (40%)

After the ranks were announced, we figured out that there are bizarre instances where students have seen their leads of as much as 50 marks in JEE Mains being totally wiped out as they trailed by five odd marks in Boards examinations. In fact, there are instances where a difference of only 5-7 marks in boards has set a student back by as much as 2000 ranks.

Here, take a look at this compilation of some data that clearly reveals the disparity resulting from this normalisation process:

JEE Main 2014 topper, Srinidhi Prabhu who has secured AIR 1 in JEE Main scored 336 in the JEE Main exam and he managed to hold Rank 133 in JEE Advanced. Prabhu managed to secure a seat at only IIT Madras. Similarly, second rank holder in JEE Main, D Srilekha scored 327 marks in the JEE Advanced exam and held rank 471 in JEE Advanced.

Quite distressed about the whole process, one of the JEE Main 2014 aspirants, Divyanshu Goel, shared, “It looks 60-40 but it is actually 75-25 in favour of boards. Also students from boards other than CBSE are at advantage".

Be it the student or the teacher, the system has left all of them in a state of confusion. These individuals are using social media as a portal to express their anger and frustration. In fact, a whole new petition has been filed against the normalization process. Here, take a look at it! Two years and no changes yet has been noticed even after various petitions and pleas by students aka sufferers of this system.

By the looks of it, the system completely seems lopsided and confusing and with many slip-ups, how is the normalization process normal?

Dis process is stupid. i know a girl who scored less than 100 marks in jee main and 92% in UP board has got all india rank 35000 in general category.! I,who got 134 marks in jee main and 86% in CBSE board, have AIR 95000. she is really stupid. i feel sorry for other deserving students & NITs.

Bro but 86% in cbse is not good though. When you know from very starting that you need marks in boards also as normalisation states you should be aware of that Scoring in state boards is tough
