Here we shall throw some light on how one should divide the time between the three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics while carrying out the JEE preparation.

How to divide time between the three subjects?

All three domains i.e. Physics, Chemistry and mathematics are equally important. There is no set demarcation as to how much time should be devoted to a particular subject. The aspirants must give equal importance to all three as they carry equal weightage in JEE. At the same time, it is a fact that if you are weak in mathematics, you will have to devote more time to it as compared to the other two so as to make sure that you are able to get through JEE.

  • Chalk out your plan

Before attempting to make a plan, consult the IIT JEE sample papers. Referring the IIT papers is as important as knowing the IIT JEE syllabus. Once you get an idea about the areas from which questions are generally asked, you can plan out your preparation accordingly. Devote more time to subject which seems to be within your reach but do not ignore any of the section. It is important to focus on the sections which usually fetch more questions.

  • IIT Study Material

The study material that you follow also makes a huge difference. There are numerous books for IIT JEE. Now, if we consider the case of mathematics, a single question can be solved using various methods. The aspirants must acquaint themselves with various shortcuts and tricks of solving mathematics questions. This can actually help in improving your scores in the JEE. Some books present the subject matter in a language which can be comprehended easily. This also saves time and hence more time can be devoted to other subjects. The aspirants must try to solve maximum possible questions from the IIT JEE Past papers. Spend some time on building the concepts and then maximum time should be spent on practicing questions. These papers act as rehearsal tests and prevent panic situations.

  • When to study IIT JEE Chemistry or IIT JEE Physics

Identify your times of highs and lows. If you feel fresh in the morning then devote the morning hours to chemistry as it involves memorizing of formulae and reactions. Devote the afternoon hours to mathematics as even if you feel lazy, your time is utilized in solving questions. The remaining time can then be devoted to Physics. Some aspirants find Physics tough and so they may study it in morning.

  • Identify your strengths

Those eyeing the IITs first need to identify their strong areas. The main aim is to get through the JEE and then one should focus on improving the rank in JEE. So, equal time should be devoted to all three i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The aspirants should have a sound understanding of the concepts of all three. Once you have covered sufficient syllabus to crack JEE, you must now work on your area of expertise. Remember to work on your rank only once you are sure to get through the JEE.

  • Syllabus vs. Revision

Most of the IIT aspirants get caught in a situation where they have to make the difficult choice between whether to cover the remaining syllabus or devote time to revision. Let us assume that you have covered 80% syllabus and now you are left with less time and you can either cover the remaining syllabus or revise the portion covered. Always remember that revision is of utmost importance in such exams.

The JEE does not permit any overall choice and hence none of the topic can be left out. The simple reason behind this is that the concepts are quite-interrelated. For example, if you are weak in kinematics, you may not be able to attempt a question related to gravitation.

The last one month must be completely devoted to revision. Do not pick up any new topic or consult any new book. You need to be focused and try to sharpen your application skills as JEE tests the application of theoretical concepts.

Appropriate management of topics and timely planning can ensure your success in JEE Main 2014! This can also give you an edge over others.
