Mystory@Anshul Gupta

I had a good score in my 10th board and my parents wanted me to be an engineer. Without much thought, I opted for Science stream. Although I wasn’t sure about my choice and wanted to go for Commerce, but I stuck to Science as advised by elders (especially engineers in my family).

Many of my family members and relatives are engineers, so I too was expected to prepare for IIT-JEE, which I did for a year in class 12th but couldn’t clear the exam. I managed a decent rank in AIEEE and converted Jaypee College for pursuing BTech (ECE).

How I prepared for PG college admission

I took coaching in TIME when I was in 3rd year of my engineering. I appeared for CAT for the first time in

2013 but didn’t get a good percentile. Till that time, I was placed in Accenture so I decided to keep my job and continue my CAT preparation alongside. Then in 2015, I appeared for CAT and NMAT.

With CAT 2015, I was expecting a percentile in the range of 96-97 as I was following Shiksha and some other forums to know the views of other students about how much they are expecting and what percentile one can get at that score. But all that was speculation. More people, more speculations, more confusion.

Although I missed NMAT by 2 marks, I managed to get a decent score in CAT. I was not satisfied with this score but got really irritated with my work life in the field of IT. So I decided to leave the company and start preparing for MBA colleges from which I got calls.

I got 92.xx percentile in CAT and started getting calls from IMT G, IMI (International Management Institute) Delhi, and IIT Kharagpur. Being in GEM (General, Engineer, and Male) category, I knew at this percentile, I will get calls from this profile of colleges only. I prepared hard for my WAT-GD-PI process by reading newspapers daily, brushing up on marketing and finance jargon, and being aware of frequently asked questions in these colleges etc. Finally, I converted both IMT and IMI.

After doing some primary and secondary research, I decided to join IMT (Institute of management and Technology) Ghaziabad. The college ranks pretty good when it comes to Marketing, so that was another reason to join it. Also, the reviews, facts and

figures given on IMT website were genuine as I confirmed it with its current students and alumni as well. The only fear factor I had before joining this college was its batch size but I think with time, one can overcome it and if you are capable enough, you need not worry about it.

How I made the most of my college years

I was very excited to come to college after the admission process. Initially, within a few days, the college schedule got very hectic. We had PDP (Personality development programs), presentations, committee interviews and process with seniors, and had to stay up at night because in the day we had to attend classes and do our daily assignments.

But after 1.5 months, we were allotted our respective committees and all late night sittings ended. I made really good friends during that time. I participated in some corporate level B-school competitions and learnt many things as we got exposure to companies from different sectors with real time problems. I would say all those activities are important as they are value added knowledge for us.

Now in 4th term, we have less number of classes as compared to 1st and 2nd terms but the burden remains the same. Projects, presentations, daily assignments are all there but now we are used to it and are having a good time. Being a marketing student, I like attending marketing classes and all those classes which interest me. One thing that I realised after coming to B-school is that never make a perception about anyone because here everyone is competing, whether it is in form of CGPA , Summer/final placements etc. I am a part of BGS committee at my college. It being a new committee, I have learnt a lot as we have to increase the visibility and awareness regarding this committee among all students, so basically we have to market it.

This year our college has started SSR course (social sustainability and responsibility) in which they have tied up with different NGOs and all 1st year students are working with those NGOs in groups of six. It is a very different (would say a lifetime) experience for every student.
