The council of IITs has decided to set a new pattern for IIT-JEE from 2013 onwards.

The Council of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has decided to set a new pattern of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and to give it an entire new look from 2013. The new pattern of the exam would include an aptitude test for the exam aspirants. The students will have to clear this aptitude test. This test will consist of questions based on reasoning and all other subjects that the students have studied in their schools.

This aptitude test would also include questions related to subjects like physics, chemistry and maths. It has been proposed by the Council of IITs in a meeting to reduce the pressure on students. Director of IIT Kanpur, Sanjay Govind Dhande said that, it has been proposed to give due respect to every subject that a student has studied in school, be it history, geography or any other subject. He also said that it can only be implemented by conducting an aptitude test which will have both qualitative and quantitative reasoning questions.

It has been also decided that instead of calculating the performance of the students on the basis of percentages received in their class XII, the weightage must be given to the percentile. He also said that it is quite tough to bring uniformity in the percentages achieved by the students and percentage of a student differs from one state board to another. To bring in this level of uniformity, the percentages of students would be converted into percentiles and it would be used for further comparisons.

He also mentioned that as there are only two central boards- CBSE and ICSE and every state has different boards. So, it would be difficult to bring out uniformity in the percentages achieved by an individual student when comparing his performance with the other individuals. To fulfill this need, the percentage of marks achieved by the students would be converted into a percentile and it would be done through virtual mapping by Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata.

He also added that the 50% weightage would be given to this percentile performance and other 50% weightage would be given to the performance in the IIT-JEE. Students will be accessed on the basis of these two performances. He also said that, due to this reason some sort of uniformity has to establish to match the performance of the individual students with each other.

It is relevant in a way when there is presence of so many boards and every board has its own importance, then matching the percentile is the only way out to calculate the student's performance.

Such recommendations have been suggested by the Ramaswamy committee to the ministry of human resource and development but at this stage, but the plan has not been approved yet. He also said that as soon as it will be approved, the changes would be made in the pattern of IIT-JEE and then you would be able to see the IIT-JEE in new avatar.
