Protein Rich food on IIT menus.
Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) campus at Powai has left no stones unturned to provide the best to its students whether its education or a balanced diet. From consulting a nutritionist, training mess workers and revamping the entire menu they have taken many measures for overall health of students.
The campus has 12 messes catering to 14 hostels with an average of 8,000 students each day. Last year around 500 students were affected by food poisoning. A new contractor was given the charge from January. U Yajnik, the dean of student affairs at IIT-B said hat they want to improve the protein content in the food by including fresh vitamin enhanced food in the diet chart of the students. For which the menus were also approved by a dietician with decreasing fried food.
The institute has taken the help of Taj flight catering five years back for training mess workers and it is possible that they once again seek its help. But students are in the favor of tasty sumptuous meals rather than healthy food. Candidates contesting for general secretary for hostel affairs are campaigning on the grounds of providing the students with better, tastier and hygienic food.
It will take IIT at least two years to refurnish all the canteens.
