G L chugh, 66 interviewed by Pranab Ghosh

Ipassed my Class XI (Higher Secondary) examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics from Salwan Higher Secondary School in 1960.

Lessons learnt

The most important lessons, which I took away from school, were that of discipline and inspiration. I was a student of the science stream, and engineering was considered an ideal career. Our teachers would keep telling us that we should  become engineers. Though I did not become one, the lessons in discipline that I learnt from my teachers helped me shape my career as a scientist.

The teacher

The teacher who influenced me the most used to teach us geometrical and mechanical drawing. It is unfortunate that I have forgotten his name. But his dedication towards his profession still lives in my memory. He used to care about every student and inspired us a lot. Education and career

I did my MSc in chemistry with specialisation in physical chemistry. That was in 1965. And it did help shape my career as a scientist and technocrat. I joined ONGC as a scientist in 1968 on the basis of my Master’s degree and went on to become a chief chemist.

Education then and now

While we were students the focus was on subjective studies but now a days the focus is on objective studies, which requires thorough understanding of the subject. The methods of teaching were not so interesting and innovative then as they are today. Moreover the parents then did not have to exert themselves so much or care about so much for their ward’s studies as they have to do now.
