Apollo Group To Foray Into Medical Education
Hospital chain Apollo Group is foraying into medical education and will soon start a medical college for under-graduate courses. The Apollo Group is already in talks with three reputed international universities for a tie-up. The group is planning to introduce new syllabus to bring about a change. The Apollo Group would also invest Rs.18 billion to expand its facilities.

Online Diploma In Patent Law Introduced
A postgraduate course in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and patent law has been started by Delhi's National Law University. The course will be run through video conferencing. It will train students to get absorbed in research and development organisations, government and non-government agencies. The 12-month course will encompass all forms of intellectual property (IP) law, filing procedures and how to conduct trademark searches. Other than legal frameworks, the training will also cover the technical aspects of writing patents and other forms of IP documents, within US, European and Indian processes. The classes will be conducted before office hours, twice a week. The total fee for the program is Rs 1,55,000.

AIEEE May Go Online From 2011
Aspiring engineering students preparing to appear in All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) may get an option of taking the test on-line from 2011. A committee has been set up to explore the possibility of holding the test on-line in addition to the regular written format. The change is being mooted to reduce the mounting logistic pressure in holding the test. At present, over 10 lakh students appear in the AIEEE every year.

India-US Education Council To Be Set Up
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) India and US universities are looking at setting up an India-US Education Council to boost and coordinate the bilateral relations in education between the two countries. Under the council, the two sides will collaborate on different areas including research, distant education, vocational education, skill development, exchange of faculty, models of public-private partnership and also expertise for the setting up of universities.

IIMs Plan To Go International
The prestigious Indian Institutes of Management are planning to make international foray as a common brand rather than individual institutions. Recently, the human resource development ministry had in-principle approved of IIMs to set up campuses abroad. The IIMs are looking at pooling their financial and faculty resources to retain the brand value internationally.

Gujjar Quota Stayed By Rajasthan HC
The Rajasthan High Court has stayed the job and educational quota granted to the Gujjars and economically backward classes (EBCs) in the state. The HC has also issued a notice to the government asking why it should not be scrapped. The ruling came on an appeal by a few students. HC stayed the reservation as it exceeded the overall 50 percent limit fixed for reservations. In July this year, the Rajasthan government announced five percent quota for Gujjars and 14 percent for the EBCs, taking the total reservations for employment and in educational institutions in the state to 68 percent.
