Shiksha Survey: TO B.E. OR NOT TO B.E.?
Trends, technology and attitudes have come and gone. But the Indian students’ fixation with engineering as a career choice continues to remain supreme. What explains its enduring popularity with students? Is it the wide scope and flexibility the discipline offers? The pressure of parents and peers? Or the mysterious ‘engineering gene’ at work?
Shiksha.com, India’s leading college selection website, did a survey to gauge the psychology to figure out why India is an engineering crazy nation. Here’s an infographic to figure out why India is an engineering crazy nation.
Shiksha’s Take
We are seeing a major shift happening in student behaviour, especially in the undergraduate category. Earlier parents and relatives used to play a major role in selecting colleges for their children. As such, the decisions were more based on hearsay. With the internet making information freely accessible, students are looking to do their own research before choosing a college. They are not going by what their parents, friends or relatives are saying. They go on the internet and try to figure out what others are saying about that college, the kind of facilities available, the infrastructure, faculty quality and placements and the reviews given out by alumni. Also, they verify this information across multiple sources to seek consistency. Given this is one of the most important decisions of their lives, students today aren’t leaving this to chance. Maintaining and managing a consistent and prominent online presence is more important than ever for colleges looking to attract top students.
