Students’ Speak: Dream college or dream goal, choice is yours
By: Samarth Agarwal
Every student has a goal that he cherishes in childhood days. While being busy with the books in school, we as a student grew up and got to know about the steps to accomplish our dream and then only we came to know about college.
Further, we heard from someone or on the internet about government and private colleges. After that, we came to know about the differences between them; the government colleges are supposed to be better as their fees are low while in private colleges, they charge heavy and faculties are not well educated, etc.
Our little brain decided to do some research on its own and after some research with little homework, we found several colleges in our hometown which only showed the stats in terms of placements in big MNCs consisting of the processes such as entrance exams, interview (for higher studies), etc. to get admission. As time passed, our dream goal shifted and became a dream college. Now our aim is changed and getting admission in a reputed college became our first dream, which we wanted anyhow.
Then came the scary day, a day filled with anxiety comprising a little bit of confusion in the concepts learned last night or even at the last moment. All students appeared for examinations. After that, they were busy until the result declaration day in deciding their back-up plan what to do if they got their favorite college but not the domain, favorite domain but not the college, etc. There are lots of permutations and combinations in which the best combination is of favorite college and favorite domain.
Talk to parents
Results declaration day comes and the results are announced, some pass and some not. In my opinion, when you participate in that competition, you dare to compete at a national level. Some will happily enjoy that moment while for some that would be the worst in their life. Now for those who didn't qualify or even just qualified (since being on the cutoff marks will not provide you with any benefit regarding admission), problems start in both mental and emotional states. They find it hard to decide whether to drop or not, the pressure is so high that even the small decision is a big task for them.
Parents play an important role during that time. First of all, they should provide necessary support in terms of mental state to their children so that they can gain some confidence for a comeback. Parents are the only people who know their children very well. Students need to spend some time with their families and enjoy quality time. Keep yourself busy in your hobbies so that such activities keep you away from negativity.
After some time, they must discuss with their family and analyse themselves whether they will be scoring high marks next year since there might be a chance that they will score even less. Another thing is to prevent any type of comparison between you and anyone else. The brain automatically performs a comparison on hearing from the outside world since nowadays, there are so many posts, news, and articles, etc. related to admission in the college, either in government or private.
Ask parents not to gossip about admission
It is found that parents start talking about the admissions of their children in the neighborhood which creates an unknown pressure and unsuitable environment for their children.
The thoughts from the outside world cause anxiety, tension, depression in the child which results in loss of self-esteem and self-confidence. The child now starts thinking that now he can't pursue his dream and procure it anymore, he loses all his hopes. But I will say it's not the dead-end for you. You just need to stick with your ambition, your success is a little bit postponed, that's it.
You don't need to worry about your future; your success is in your hands not in the mark sheet or the college. If you get admitted in a private institute, just attend more workshop, seminars, internships (it will give you a real-world exposure), debate, group-discussions(marketing student must improve their communication skills), the moot court(law students who want NLU as their dream college) conducted by any government institutions, organisations (even good private university). Just don't give up, try hard, you will achieve success.
