Rahat Bano talks to Aditi shukla, 24.

I attended Mater Dei School, New Delhi, class of 2003.

Lessons learnt

Tolerance for diversity. In our school, we had many students who were not from a strong financial background. But the teachers made no distinction between them and others. Because of what we saw at school, we learnt to be open minded. We had a wider acceptance level.

The teacher

Our chemistry teacher in classes XI and XII, Prem Khilnani, was instrumental in making me realise my weaknesses as well as my strengths. I had been a good student and was active in extra-curricular activities too. I was probably over-confident, overlooking things. He  made me see my folly.

Education and career

Formal education indeed prepared me for my career. And this is not only because of being in good institutions but also due to a very bright peer group. Did I see drawbacks in the education process? Our education is about clearing exams. There’s little application of theory.
