THE Asia University Rankings: 10 Indian Universities in top 100
The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2014 which covers the entire continent of Asia, including Turkey and the Middle East was recently declared and the amazing fact was 10 Indian education institutions made it to the list of top 100 universities in Asia. As per these rankings, the University of Tokyo in Japan is the best educational institute in Asia. This University scored above other Asian colleges and Universities by having an overall score of 76.4. At the second and third rank at this listing was National University of Singapore with a score of 72.4 and The University of Hong Kong with a score of 65.3.
As per these rankings which are powered by Thomson Reuters, institutions were ranked on the basis of 13 performance indicators which were further grouped into five areas. These criterions and their percentage share in overall score are as follows:

Panjab University

Established 1882 as University of Punjab at Lahore (now in Pakistan), Panjab University campus is spread over an area of 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25 of the city of Chandigarh. The University has 75 teaching and research departments and 15 centers/chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh.
Panjab University also has 188 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab and having one rural regional centre at Kauni and three regional centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

Established in 1951, IIT Kharagpur was established to train scientists and engineers. The first batch at this educational institute had 224 students and 42 teachers. The official website states, “The institute is fully residential. Students are accommodated in 20 Halls of Residence and the staff is provided with quarters. Accommodation for visitors is arranged in the Technology Guest House, CEC Guest House, Alumni Guest House or CTS Visitors Hall, or if need arises, in a students' Hall of Residence”.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur

Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur has a campus which is spread over an area of 1,055 acres. The Institute awards bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in various branches of technology and science. The Institute has about 2500 undergraduate and 850 postgraduate students, 300 faculty, and more than 1500 supporting staff.
Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Established in 1961, IIT Delhi has around 2,900 undergraduate students and 2,700 post graduate students. IIT Delhi has the following departments – Applied Mechanics, Biochemical, Chemical, Chemistry, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Humanities, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical, Physics and Textile.
Located in Hauz Khas in South Delhi, IIT Delhi is spread over an area of 325 acres and is divided in four zones:
- Student Residential Zone
- Faculty and Staff Residential Zone
- Student Recreational Area, that includes the Student Activity Center (SAC), football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, hockey field, lawn tennis courts.
- Academic Zone that includes department offices, lecture theaters, libraries and workshops.
IIT Delhi has e 13 hostels, out of which 11 are for boys and two are for girls.
Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

IIT Roorkee has slipped three spots to land on rank 59 in THE Asia Rankings which this educational institution shares with IIT Delhi and Hanyang University in the Republic of Korea.
Formerly known as the University of Roorkee and then as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, IIT Roorkee was established in 1847. The official website states, “The Institute offers Bachelor's Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate's Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres”. It is further added that, “The Institute admits students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centres all over India”.
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati

Established in 1994, IIT Guwahati shares the 74th rank in THE Asia Rankings with Hiroshima University in Japan which has also been awarded 27.9 score.
The official website reveals, “At present the Institute has eleven departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments”.
IIT Guwahati is spread over an area of 285 hectares on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra.
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

Established with technical assistance from the German Government for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India, IIT Madras was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. “IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning”, states the official website.
Jadavpur University

Established in 1955, Jadavpur University has two campuses, while the main campus is located at Jadavpur, the new one is located at Salt Lake. This University has University 36 departments, 21 interdisciplinary schools along with 40 centres of study.
Jadavpur University offers 39 undergraduate courses, 57 postgraduate programmes, 14 M. Phil courses, 15 Phd courses and 8 PG diploma programmes for admissions.
In THE Asia Rankings, Jadavpur University shares the 76th rank with Ewha Womans University of Republic of Korea and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
Aligarh Muslim University

Established by Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875 as Madrasatul Uloom Musalmanan-e-Hind, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was later named as Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College). A school for girls was established in 1907 and by 1920 the college was transformed and named Aligarh Muslim University.
The official website reveals, “The college was originally affiliated with the University of Calcutta and subsequently got affiliated with the university of Allahabad in 1885. Near the turn of the century, the college began publishing its own magazine, The Aligarian, and established a Law School”.
Jawaharlal Nehru University

Established in 1969, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is spread over a 1,000 acres campus. The official website states, “Annual admission tests are simultaneously held at 37 centres spread across the length and breadth of the country, and special care is taken to draw students from the underprivileged castes and ethic groups by reserving 22.5 per cent of seats for them. Overseas students form some 10 percent of the annual intake”.
The University hostel system includes 17 Hostels for Boys and Girls and one complex accommodating married students.
