Q. According to you, what is the minimum time frame needed to prepare well for JEE Main? How long did you prepare for it? What was your preparation strategy?

A.

JEE Main's syllabus has a few extra topics from that of JEE Advanced. My strategy was to prepare the common topics with respect to only the advanced paper. This is because JEE Advanced has tougher questions and preparing for that covers the preparation for Mains. Extra chapters can be done during Boards' preparation. So I think there is no need to work for JEE Main separately.

Q. Is it necessary to join a coaching institute or is self-study good enough? What study plan did you follow for your prep?

A.

I started JEE preparation from class XI and for that I had taken coaching classes for all three subjects. I think proper guidance keeps you focused but if you are confident with your strategy, there is no such necessity of taking coaching in addition to school.

Q. How did you divide your time between chapters/section? Which chapters/sections did you spend more time on?

A.

All chapters are equally important for the examination. But I suggest ample time should be spent on:

  1. Physics: Waves, Optics, Electromagnetic Induction
  2. Chemistry: p-block elements, isomerism, ionic equilibrium, thermodynamics
  3. Mathematics: complex algebra, inverse trigonometry, conic sections, permutations and combinations, definite integrals.

Q. How much time did you spend on revision?

A.

I started revision from November 2012(my exam was in March 2013).

Q. Any useful study material/ reference books you can recommend to JEE MAIN aspirants?

A.

HC Verma is good for Physics; NCERT is enough for Chemistry and Arihant series for Mathematics.

Q. What did you do right to crack it?

A.

What many aspirants do is that they spend time on three subjects in an unbalanced manner.

I strongly suggest to each topic equally.

Q. Top tips for JEE Main 2014?

A.
  1. Go through NCERT rigorously
  2. Try to finish paper in 2hrs 45 mins.
  3. Join a good test series.
  4. Don't use calculators throughout XI-XII
  5. Go through graphs and derivations properly in Physics.
