NIRF Rankings 2022: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to rank institutions of higher education and learning in India. No doubt, ranking institutions of higher education is not an easy task, which requires in-depth knowledge of the higher education system in India. NIRF is the first-ever effort by the government to rank higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country. It is released by the Education Ministry every year with the aim of promoting competitive excellence among the higher educational institutions in India, which is based on the parameters. These parameters are discussed in detail below. Before its launch, higher education institutions were ranked by private entities, mainly news magazines.
On July 15, 2022, the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022. NIRF is a framework that outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) bagged the number one position in the ‘Engineering category’. This year too, the first five spots have remained the same. IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay remained in the second and third ranks, respectively. On the other hand, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur retained their previous year's NIRF rankings, that is, fourth and fifth. IIT Hyderabad has dropped a position and is now ranking 9th. In the top 10 list of engineering colleges, NIT Tiruchirapalli and NIT Surathkal bagged Rank 8th and 10th respectively.

What is the NIRF Ranking?
NIRF stands for National Institutional Ranking Framework. It was approved and launched by the Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015. It is a framework that outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The NIRF Ranking is advantageous to students preparing to pursue higher education in India in knowing the ranking of institutes.
NIRF Ranking: Methodology
A Core Committee was set up by MHRD to identify the broad parameters for ranking several universities and institutions. The methodology also draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding reached by this committee.
