How to prepare?

Reasoning Ability

It is very important for students to follow a specific pattern and to know their strengths and weaknesses. If you feel that solving simpler questions will save your precious time then you must practice sticking to it. Students must keep in mind that tackling order of questions too is also an integral feature of an entrance exam. To be precise, SSC Combined Higher Secondary Exam 2011 has previously witnessed a trend where students have tended to solve initial 15 questions of the paper first due to their relative easiness. Students must try answering these at a speed of 20-30 seconds per question. By doing this, they will be able to spare buffer time for solving tougher time consuming questions beginning from 15 to 21.

Quantitative Aptitude

This segment in particular tests a student's numerical abilities. Candidates here deal with questions from basic mathematical topics such as:

  • Ratio and proportion
  • Averages
  • Percentage
  • Simple/compound interest etc

Students however, need not panic and must keep in mind the saying ‘practice makes a man perfect.' You don't need to be a mathematician to take this exam. All you need to do is, be sincere in your work and devote ample amount of time for practice.

While practicing for this segment, students must learn to make notes and pen down all the important topics, which in turn will help them at the time of revision. Also, students must read and review all those maths topics upon which they are to be tested. They must focus on their areas of improvement i.e. weak aspects whilst preparing for the same. They must try solving easier questions first and leave out on questions that they don't know rather than getting stuck onto them. Since tough questions are bound to be time-consuming it is always advisable to save them for last.

Moreover, rather than rushing away with the paper, students must carefully read all the questions and then go about answering the same. Since the exam format is in multiple choice form, eliminating wrong answers with no logical sense is what a student must practice.

General English

The English section of the exam primarily focuses upon testing a student's language skills. It comprises questions on:

  • Comprehension
  • Fill in the blanks
  • Para jumbles
  • Sentence
  • Idioms
  • Phrases etc

To read English newspapers, regularly, with a special emphasis on editorial part is a strategy that a student must adopt while preparing for this section. By doing this, they will not only enhance their knowledge but also get to build up their vocabulary.

Also, students willing to crack English language section must indulge in this habit of noting down the difficult words and searching for their meaning in the dictionary.

General Awareness

In order to score high in this section, students must be aware of latest day-today happenings and current affairs. Keeping a track of world over news via medium of magazines and newspapers too is important for cracking this segment. Students must ensure that they read newspapers on a daily basis and stay updated about the same.

Additionally, for appearing in SSC Combined Higher Secondary Exam 2011 students also need to go through their NCERT books up to 12th level and refer to Competition Refresher magazine.
