AILET 2023 Topper Arshiya Gupta with AIR 3 in an exclusive interview with shiksha.com says that her main preparation strategy is to give lots and lots of mocks. Q. Congratulations! Did you expect to be the topper of AILET 2023?
A. That is something nobody can honestly expect, only wish for. I knew that my preparation was good and that I had been prepared for any kind of pattern changes. I knew that I would do well, but topping the exam definitely came as a surprise.
Q. What was the preparation strategy that helped you crack AILET 2023?
A. It was giving lots and lots of mocks. AILET is an exam that is all about speed so I used to give one CLAT mock and 1 AILET mock test every day for at least the last month of my preparation. That really helped me get really quick at attempting all types of questions.
Q. How did you manage time between board exams and entrance exam prep?
A.
Our exam happened in December so it was quite a while before boards were to happen. That is why I was able to devote all my time to my CLAT and AILET prep. After they were over, I was able to sail through my board prep also.
Q. Did you take any coaching for this exam?
A. Yes, I was there with Clat Possible, and also made use of NLTI's resources. They were excellent in terms of the faculty and mocks they made. I really got the guidance I needed especially when I was feeling directionless.
Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam?
A.
My study plan mainly revolved around GK and mocks. For GK I made use of a lot of compendiums and articles I found online, though with the outlook CLAT and AILET are adopting now, newspapers are the way to go.
Q. Which books did you read to prepare for the exam?
A. There is no "book" one can read to prepare for this exam. It's all about what one can learn from the perspective of a curious citizen. That is why I focused on a practice-based approach apart from getting to know of some basic legal principles.
Q. How did you deal with your strengths and weaknesses while preparing for the exam?
A. My main weakness was speed and completing all the questions in the mock but I was able to counter it by practicing more and more and giving plenty of mocks. As for my strengths, it was GK and I continuously tried to improve it by going through different resources.
Q. What other law entrance exams did you take or are planning to take?
A. My main goal was CLAT and AILET only and I would've looked at others if they didn't go well. That being said, I did apply to a few universities abroad for courses in political science and international affairs.
Q. Was law always your first preference?
A.
There's quite a story behind this. I come from a doctor family so up till class 9 being a doctor was something that came naturally to me. However, lockdown happened in class 10 and that gave me time to think about my future career options. That is when I realized that my aptitude would be best suited for law and as I studied more of it while preparing for law, I grew to love it as a subject too.
Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take the exam next year?
A. Yes, know your paper. Go through its pattern and understand what it's demanding of you. Then be sure to join good coaching where you can get the required practice material. One thing that especially pushed me was a great peer group so having that too can help one who is preparing for this exam.
Q. What are your future plans?
A. My future plans as of now are going to law school and taking part in all the activities it has to offer and all the experiences. 5 years is a long time, I don't know where I'll end up or what I'll grow to enjoy but I definitely plan on exploring every thing.
