Mystory@Mrinalani Teotia: How I chose my course and college
Let’s begin the story from my childhood. When I was a kid I was much interested in Science as compared to other subjects. Gradually, that interest turned into a passion. Science used to fascinate me and I enjoyedstudying the subject. This passion helped me to set my goal. So, I finally decided to be a surgeon (Gynaecologist).
Till 10th standard the subjects were common, no choice and I secured good percentage in board exam. My parents were happy and I am sure that they had visualized me as a surgeon that time. I was excited too and finally set out for another journey of my life. I decided to opt for PCB (medical stream) in 11th standard. I took admission in one of the best schools of Punjab – Dhilwan International. I gave the entrance exam and cleared it. I was literally excited and waiting for the accomplishment of my studies.
Initially, everything was going good but what came as an obstacle was my tender heart. Honestly, I am not so brave to see human blood, internal organs, perform dissection or anything like this. But as we all know medical profession not only requires knowledge, but it needs practical skills too. A doctor must possess a brave heart. It became very clear to me that I cannot perform surgery. However, I decided to prepare myself mentally in the two years and I filled the registration form for AIPMT (All India Pre Medical Test). But I was in constant dilemma whether I did right or wrong. To be true I was a good student, secured good marks, never missed a single day of school, above all this I never joined tuition classes in my entire life. However, I encountered lots of obstacles during my school days. However, I came out of from every obstacle with my rigid will power. I spent my whole day and night studying hard, considering 4 to 5 books. This is how I spent my 2 years of XI-XII andat the end I secured 86% in XII board. Now the time was to get admission in the desired course and college.
I was in a dilemma and not quite ready for MBBS. However, reluctantly I gave AIPMT exam but unfortunately I came to know about the cancellation of this test because of some illegal means used by the students for cheating. The test was to be reconduct after 3 months. I was literally in great trouble for a while as I thought it to be just a wastage of time. I realised that medical is not my field so I decided to take my step back at the right time before it’s too late. My mother supported me and advised me to opt for the course in which I am comfortable. But I didn’t dare to share it with my father as he had lot of expectations from me.
One day I tried to follow my interest and that’s how I switched over to BJMC (Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication). Travelling and exploring culture of other countries is my strongest passion. Apart from this DSLR camera fascinates me and I love to communicate. This is what encouraged me towards exploring a career in media. You can easily assume the continuous problems I faced in those days. The story will be stretched if I go deeper. Everything was disturbed badly. Now the time was to choose the college.
I was searching for a professional degree course in media. On the other hand, my time was almost running out, admissions were closing soon. I understand it completely that a person gets what is written in their fate. Eventually, I searched about IIMT Group of Colleges, Greater Noida and took admission in BJMC course. I am very glad to be part of this college as its affiliated with CCS University, one of the top Universities of India. This is how I faced diversion from one path to another. May be some would find my story to be weird as my idea to drop medical is little rare. But media field was written in my fortune, so I grab it.
How I cracked college admission
The admission in media course depends upon the marks secured in class 12th i.e. 50% or above in the concerned stream. Apart from this the vocabulary test is there and command over the language (Both English and Hindi) is tested. However, many colleges and universities conduct different entrance tests. Every college has their own way.
I have never joined any coaching classes in my entire life. Even after all the obstacles during class 12th, I just kept studying on my own. And now being a media student I believe in practical exposure and learning things on my own. It is a professional field that does not require any coaching at all. However, I faced many problems during admission time. My motto was to get a professional degree in the field of media. Before reaching out to IIMT College, I made a try in Amity University but it was offering a professional media course as a part of distance education. After this I visited AAFT Institute (Noida), IMS (Noida), and Noida International University (Greater Noida) but I couldn’t find the peace and perfection I was looking for and most importantly these do not provide the transport facility that was the basic reason to drop my idea of taking admission in these colleges.
With a broken heart I looked out for Jaipur University in Rajasthan but as one can assume it’s too far from Noida. Moreover, I was not in a position to left Mumma and Papa. Seriously, the time was running out fast as that was a closing time for admissions. It all made me worry but as I believe in God, soon I saw the advertisement of IIMT College and that’s how I took admission there. I am glad to be a part of this college as it provides all those facilities that I always wanted.
What I gained from my college experience
Initially, I was a little worried about the environment of the college. But as the time passed I found it to be quite good and healthy. Students were so frank that we all became comfortable soon. It has been a learning experience for me as I got to learn a lot. This experience has made me strong and chivalrous enough that now I can face any kind of obstacles. I have encountered lots of issues during my college days.
I have spent almost two years in this college and soon learnt to gel well. I made many friends but out of those many, some became my best friends. I got a gang of seven friends and we have spent a beautiful life altogether. I can’t forget the time when we all supported each other in our hardest time. A beautiful smile and energetic vibes possess my soul whenever I think about those days.
Journalism and Mass Communication is a vast subject that gives abundance of knowledge on all topics. However, I like to attend the classes of photo journalism, reporting and public relations. DSLR always fascinates me (soon I will buy it) and photography is my hobby. I love to capture the scenes that are full of beauty and also give some message. I am proud to say that I have also won a photography competition six months back. I want to thank my college for providing us a platform, the knowledge and facility I was looking for.
Our college conducts fest every year that gives good exposure to students and provides a platform to showcase their talent. Apart from this, being a media student we also arrange our photogallery to expose our talent through our photos. I also love to take part in extra-curricular activities (dance, singing, anchoring etc) and inter-house competitions (debates, ad mad show, painting etc). My college has modified my life deeply and now I can take decisions easily and understand people better. My life has undergone a huge change and I felt random diversion of my paths.
But all this made me stronger and stronger. I have converted myself from being an introvert to an extrovert. Meeting with reputed journalists and visiting established channels has powered my soul from within and motivated me to prepare well for this professional field. Undoubtedly, I want to be a part of the media world but I look out for my other dreams too that I would not like to disclose. However, I would like to see myself at a reputed position in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication.
