22-Month Work Experience Now Mandatory for Admission to IIM Bangalore
IIM Bangalore is now planning to revamp its admission process to its flagship two-year post-graduate
management programme, its pedagogy, and its grading scheme. The proposal is to make work experience of at least 22 months mandatory for admission to the programme, loosen up the focus on apex percentiles in the Common Admission Test (CAT) management entrance exams, and give more weightage to leadership potential and ethical and social sensitivity in the applicants.
Class of 2011 had 23% MBA aspirants without any work experience while the class of 2012 included 28% freshers. The institute is also planning to make summer placements optional for students and to abolish the practice of pre-placement talks and interviews for summer internships. The summer internships will now be mapped to resumes received for the purpose.
Other major changes include a proposal to further diversify its student profile by including at least 10% international students in its batch, and do away with the concepts of Grade Point Average (GPA) and cumulative GPA and 75% compulsory attendance. Instead, the institute will adopt an ordinal discrete grading scheme, an online mechanism for course and faculty feedback, and will introduce innovation week for special workshops, intensive courses, and projects.
Indian Institute of Management - Bangalore (IIM-B) Board of Governors, headed by Mukesh Ambani, has also set up a five-member committee to evaluate internal and external governance issues. The committee included the likes of ITC Chairman Emeritus K L Chugh, Biocon Head Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, MindTree Vice-Chairman Subroto Bagchi, and KIIT University Vice-Chancellor A S Kolaskar.
