Here’s an excerpt from the interview.
Q. Is this your first attempt?
No, my second attempt
Q. How much did you score in your previous attempts?
98.13 percentile
Q. What other exams did you take?
IIFT-70, SNAP-99.9, NMAT- 247, XAT- yet to declared. But obviously, my first preference is CAT.
Q. What is the minimum time-frame needed to prepare well for CAT?
Six to eight months is sufficient, especially since everyone has some sort of experience in Maths and English. Maximum - a year is sufficient.
Q. How long did you prepare for it?
I started preparing from the end of third year of my college. I reattempted CAT this year. So for me, it’s almost a period of one and a half years.
Q. What was your study plan during preparation?
I started with the topics that interested me most. Towards the last six months, after I graduated, I started going topic wise – preparing with topics like Verbal, which was weaker than Quant. But, I ended up giving more time to Quant.
Q. What did you do to improve your weak areas?
Basically, counsel with my teachers at the coaching institute – Endeavour Careers. And then my friends were there to support me. During a free period, we would sit together and clear all doubts. Vocabulary was one area that concerned me very much. I focused on learning English and use it as much as I could. In Quant, I was good enough. I did some regular practice and solved tough questions found on internet or ones that teachers gave me.
Q. How much time did you spend on revision?
I revised for almost a month, with focus on Mock CATs.
Q. Is it necessary to join a coaching institute or is self-study good enough?
It’s a personal opinion. Some consider themselves good enough to pull it off with coaching – it is OK. It not something that is done under peer pressure.
But most of us feel that some guidance is need. Because, coming from engineering background and a relatively small town, I didn’t know much about the process of CAT. I could have tried to do maths and English on my own. But whole thing converts into Quant, Verbal, reading and personal development. That is something coaching institutes do. There is a competitive environment and a bigger circle of friends. That motivated me to join coaching centre.
Q. Which town are you from?
I belong from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh; but currently based out of Bhopal. I did my schooling from Kendriya Vidyalay, Rewa. I am living in Ahmedabad because of college.
Q. Tell us about your family. They must be very happy!
Yeah, of course. They supported me very well even when I decided to reattempt CAT. My parents and all my relatives are very happy. My mother is a home-maker and father works in MP Government.
Q. Were you always a bright student?
Yes, I was always good academically.
Q. What are your hobbies?
I love watching TV shows – sitcoms. It started from first year of my college —watching shows like Friends. Now I watch lot many shows like Breaking Bad, shows related to crime fiction, comedy and other sitcoms. I also like to club and partying.
Q. Any tips for future CAT aspirants?
Just believe in yourself!
