The first thing one is sure to notice when he/she enters the campus of Symbiosis Institute of Operations Management (SIOM) is the college’s impressive academic building. Things that set this b-school apart from its contemporaries is the hands-on SAP training, six sigma green belt certification by KPMG and a collaboration with Munich University of applied sciences, Germany.

However, something about which students often crib is that the campus is small as compared to other b-schools. There is also no available ground for outdoor activities such as cricket and football, forcing students to be content with indulging in indoor sports.  

Another major put off is the fact that SIOM offers just triple sharing hostel rooms, so all students who plan to join this institute better work on their adjustment skills.

The college allows its students to enter the campus latest by 10 pm and the deadline for hostel entry is 2 pm.

Infrastructure

SIOM offers 24X7 internet connectivity to its students. The college has comfortable classrooms. However, not all the classrooms are air-conditioned only some of the classes have this privilege. Apart from classrooms the campus also encompasses yoga halls, aerobics halls and latest gym equipments. SIOM also has a fully automated modern library & information center (LIC) to cater to the information and intellectual requirements of the students and faculty. The LIC houses 7900 books, 70 periodicals & journals (Indian & foreign), three online journals, all newspapers, 109 videocassettes, 650 CDs and annual reports of companies which includes numerous case studies and HBR bound volumes (since 1984). The library also subscribes to online databases like Prowess.

Faculty

Faculty members at SIOM have vast knowledge and know the skill to make students understand the concepts easily and quickly. They prefer to keep the interaction channels open with students and are open to solving their queries at the earliest. The professors at this b-school are strict when it comes to academics and students are permitted late admission up to five minutes post the commencement of the class.  

The most popular and best faculty members are Prof Bibhuti Tripathy of the operations management & quantitative techniques department, Dr. Shilpa Parkhi who teaches finance and Dr. Rameshwar Dubey who teaches operations & supply chain management.

Teaching Techniques

Faculty at SIOM adopts a healthy mix of teaching techniques such as case studies and presentations. After which they educate students on practical applications of what they have learnt by holding a rigorous brainstorming discussion.  

There is not much pressure of tests and exams on students. However, surprise as well as planned tests form part of the internal evaluation process.

Professors provide students with some reference books which they can issue and read from the library. Also, class presentations are provided to revise the facts and topics discussed in class. Lecture notes are mostly handwritten. But, based on the application of subject and professor’s permission, laptops are also allowed in some of the classes.

Placements

SIOM is usually visited by around 85-90 companies during its placement season. Top companies that visit the campus for placements are Capgemini India Ltd, Infosys, KPIT Cummins, TCS, Zycus Infotech, Deloitte, IBM, JDA Software India Pvt. Ltd, PWC, Wipro, Cummins India, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd, Trident, United Breweries, GATI, Mahindra Logistics, Amazon, Rio Tinto, MuSigma and Tata Motors.

Attendance

Students are expected to take attendance very seriously. They need to maintain minimum 75% attendance in order to sit for their final examinations.

College Crowd & Hangout Places

Intake capacity of SIOM is 120 students. Candidates are selected by the management on merit basis. The college has decent crowd who are from almost every part of country. SIOM has extremely stringent rules against ragging. Any student involved in unruly behavior is punished as per UGC regulations.

As far as the college hangout places are concerned, the canteen and basketball court are places where you would see students hanging out and being involved in some serious discussions.

Canteen

The college canteen offers a wide variety of food (both veg and non-veg) which are served on a daily basis (breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner). The food is free as the mess fee is included in the total admission fees. The food served is of decent quality and is hygienic as well.

Symbiosis Institute of Operations Management, Nasik conducts Drishti, their annual inter college biz-cultural extravaganza. Drishti is organized on one basic theme each year. In 2013, the theme was “BUSHIDO”- ways of the Samurai.

Programmes and Fee

SIOM offers MBA (Operations Management) programme and the fee for the full programme is Rs. 9,59,000.

Verdict

SIOM has an excellent curriculum in place and offers a lot of exposure to its students by means of industry visits, summer projects and mini-projects with the industry. However, the college still needs to work on expanding its campus and making it more student-friendly.
