2020 was supposed to be a glorious year for all of us. However, it has been rocky since the very beginning. With the global pandemic and tensions of safety across the globe, it seems like everything has come to a halt. Almost every country is on lockdown right now to control the rapid spread of coronavirus. As a result, we all are stuck at home. With schools, colleges, malls, restaurants, and every public space closed, we have nowhere to go. It is undoubtedly frightening to see what is happening around the world.

Moreover, thinking about the disruptions in our daily life due to the lockdowns is even more headaches. Therefore, I decided to focus on the positive aspects of this outbreak. There is abundant time available to me now.

All the complaints that I had regarding “having no time to do this or that” is practically solved. I decided to utilize my extra-leisure days to do everything I have always thought of doing.

First of all, physical activity. This whole “staying at home whole day” is not doing any good to the body. Particularly with social distancing, we are more affected emotionally than physically. It takes a toll on us to stay away from any human contact for so long. Therefore, I started by including some sports into my daily routine like playing badminton on the terrace or doing some freehand exercises in the room itself by putting on some groovy music. It helps me stay fit as well as keep the mind healthy.

Secondly, I always wanted to acquire some new skills in designing and learning a new language. I quickly registered myself for a Photoshop course on Udemy and for a free German lesson course. Although I know very elementary-level German, I would love to take it further.

So, by the time lockdown gets lifted, I know I have learned something new that could help me steer a course in my career.

Besides, I am gifted with a lot of time to read and learn about different domains, for instance, the global economy right now, countries and their mechanisms to deal with the global crises, emerging industries during lock-downs, etc. In fact, this is by far the biggest positive aspect of the outbreak. You would never get to stay at home and learn new skills like you always wanted to.

Third, thanks to social distancing, I have seen a lot of reconnecting happening during this time. I have reconnected with friends I had probably no contact with for the last four-five years. Not communicating with the people in your life can lead to psychological issues, even depression. Initially, self-isolation was hard for me as well but then I realized that they are also going through the same situation. Hence, talking helps.

Lastly, I use most of this extra-leisure time to take care of my health. Right now, it is very important to focus on foods that boost our immunity to ensure overall good health. I ensure the intake of food that provides my body with sufficient nutrients like vitamins C, D, E, and B6. I prefer herbal tea powered by ginger, clove, tulsi, and cinnamon over the usual milk tea.

Virus or no virus, drinking water is always a good habit. Especially during summers. Adequate hydration helps in reducing stress levels. Moreover, I have been sleeping adequately during this whole time. At least 7 hours of sleep is essential. So use this time to sleep enough.

In short, I am focusing on utilizing this extra-leisure time to learn a new skill, take care of my health, and learn to develop a healthy lifestyle along the way. It is totally on us how we want to perceive this time of crisis for our own benefit.
