IIMs in India

IIMs are the best B-schools in India that offer post-graduate management programmes such as MBA, PGP, Executive MBA, MBA for Working Professionals, PhD, FPM. Some of the IIMs have recently started offering UG programmes such as Integrated-MBA and BBA. There are 21 IIMs in India and all of them are ranked among top 50 best B-schools in India by MHRD-NIRF. The 6 oldest IIMs dominate the first 10 positions in the NIRF rankings every year. The top three IIMs - IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are often listed among top 50 in world rankings for management institutions. IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore are also widely top ranked. Therefore, pursuing a management degree from the IIMs is considered very prestigious and valuable.

IIMs in India

The IIMs are the top ranked management institutes in India in several rankings and surveys (NIRF, India Today, Business Today, Financial Times). They are also the Institutions of National Importance declared by the Government of India. The top 3 IIMs - IIMA, IIMB and IIMC are the oldest campuses. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta were established in 1961. IIM Bangalore was established 12 years later in 1973. Between 2008 and 2016, fourteen IIMs were established. Latest addition to the cluster of IIMs in IIM Mumbai, which was earlier NITIE Mumbai. In 2023, NITIE was renamed at IIM Mumbai. This year, the government has given a nod to IIM Guwahati which will make the total count of IIMs to 22.

• IIMs are located all across the country and rank the highest in terms of pedagogy, faculty, infrastructure and training.
• The newest IIM to be launched in 2025 is IIM Guwahati. It is the 22nd IIM and will be offering flagship PGP programme.
• These colleges are also known for their high-paying placement opportunities in the corporate as well as the government sectors.
• Six of the 21 IIMs feature in the top 10 of the NIRF-MHRD ranking of Top Management Institutes in India.
• IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are among the Top 50 institutes for management education in the world.
• Admission to PGP/MBA courses offered by IIMs is done through CAT exam score, Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).
• For Executive PGP courses, CAT and GMAT scores are accepted for shortlisting of candidates for WAT/GD and PI rounds.

IIMs top the MHRD NIRF rankings every year by dominating the top 10 positions. IIM A, B. C and K are also ranked among top 50 or top 100 in international rankings for mananament institutions.

IIM Admission Process 2026

The admission process of IIMs includes entrance exam (CAT) , Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) . For IIM's flagship programme - PGP/MBA, CAT score is accepted for admission. Foreign candidates can apply through GMAT. Candidates have to appear for CAT (GMAT in case of international students) , then qualify the WAT-GD-PI round for admission.

For Executive MBA programmes, the selection of candidates is usually done on the basis of a written test prepared by the institute, personal interview, work experience, Statement of Purpose, etc. 

Programmes Offered by IIMs in India

The IIMs offer postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes, such as:

• MBA/PGP: The two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is the flagship programme across all IIMs, and considered the equivalent of regular MBA programmes. After the passage of IIM Act 2017, most IIMs have started offering Master in Business Administration (MBA) degrees. The IIMs are best known and rated for this two-year full-time MBA/PGP course.
• EPGP: The Executive Post Graduate Programme or EPGP is offered by almost all the IIMs. This course is designed specifically for mid level professionals with 5-12 years of work experience.
  
• IPM: Integrated Programme in Management or IPM is the five-year course after 12 offered by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu. Also Read: Get admission in IIMs after Class 12
• PGPX: Some IIMs also offer a one-year post-graduate diploma programme for graduates with work experience.
• FPM: Some IIMs offer Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), a doctoral programme considered to be equivalent to a PhD globally. 
• Certificate Executive Programmes (Short Duration or Part Time): Most IIMs also offer short-duration executive education/EMBA courses and part-time programmes that offer certificates.
• Other Unique Programmes: Some IIMs also offer unique programs, like IIM Indore's Five Year Integrated Programme in Management and IIM Lucknow's Working Managers' Programme of three years.
