IIM-A faculty to get serious about research!
Professors at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, can soon be seen dividing their professional time between research work and teaching. The change is expected as the governing board of IIM-A has introduced a new performance measurement system assigning equal weightage to both research and teaching in the annual appraisals of its faculty.
IIM-A faculty can continue to utilize 53 days in a year allotted for advisory and consulting work, as before. But research work will now come into prominence, and not be limited to being a factor considered only for promotions or for confirming teachers on probation, reported The Economic Times.
The faculty would also have to ensure that their research work is acknowledged by way of getting published in various domestic as well as international journals. The efforts will be incentivized as faculty member will earn higher credits if their research papers are carried by any leading international journal. So research will have a close bearing on the career prospects of the institute's faculty.
The times have changed since the institute's inception back in 1961. Now, it's become necessary to develop a research orientation to meet the evolved expectations of the global academic community.
Research will boost industry interface and IIM-A has to focus on research to secure its place among the world's top five institutes, Nayan Parikh, president of IIM-A Alumni Association (Ahmedabad Chapter) told ET. Read more
IIM-Ahmedabad PGPX ranked 11th overall in the Financial Times, London, Global MBA Rankings 2012. However, IIM-A's research ranking got itself the 94th position out of 100 B-schools. A school's research rank depends on the number of articles published by its full-time faculty in 45 internationally recognised academic and practitioner journals.
On the domestic front, the Business Standard's Best B-School Survey 2012 enlisted four Indian Institutes of Management among the top eight of its final listing. Read more
