IIMs change criteria after conducting CAT

The IIMs at the time of selling the admission prospectus for Rs. 1500/- per copy mentioned that everyone with 50% marks is eligible for admission provided one scores merit in the entrance. However, later, after compiling the results, IIMs have now altered the criteria subverting the claim of entrance toppers and selecting candidates with much lower marks in entrance tests.

For instance, IIM - Ahmedabad clearly sets out eligibility criteria for appearing in CAT 2010 as minimum 50% marks in graduation. Later, when the results were announced it superimposed a criteria of over 75% marks in graduation in form of AR (Application Rating). A student, who has not scored over 75% marks in graduation cannot get into into IIM-Ahmedabad unless he has scored above 90% marks in X and XII standard.

The above is not merely an anomaly but can be construed as injustice as IIM-A selected the candidates first and then fixed such standards as would debar all other candidates, who scored exceptionally well in the CAT entrance exam. The fixation of any criteria can only be with respect to and limited to an entrance examination i.e. CAT and fixation of standards cannot be done over and above the eligibility criteria especially after obtaining all results.

Each candidate, who has scored a high percentile in CAT should be considered for the interview and any other criteria, which was not announced at the time of conducting CAT or at the time of selling application forms, is illegal, arbitrary, and violative of fundamental right under Art. 14, of all exceptional candidates. IIMs have not only duped the talented students but have also defrauded them of their time and energy.
