Jammu all set to get an IIM; Cabinet gives green signal
The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment and operationalisation of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Jammu from the current academic session. The cabinet meeting was chaired by PM Narendra Modi. The new IIM is a part of Prime Minister, Narendra Modiβs package for Jammu and Kashmir.
The cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 61.90 crore. For the initial four years (2016- 2020), the IIM will be operational on a temporary campus at the Old Government College of Engineering and Technology. Later, an out campus will be set up in the Kashmir region.
In the current academic year, the student intake for the Post Graduate Diploma Programme (PGDP) in Management is 54. This number is expected to rise to 120 by the fourth year of operation. The detailed project report for the establishment of the permanent campuses is underway. The process of setting up of the campus will commence once the report is complete.
Along with IIMβs establishment approval, the cabinet also approved of an IIM Jammu Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The responsibility of IIM Jammuβs management and operation shall be in the hands of the Society with a Board of Governors (BOGs).
Currently there are 19 IIMs in the country. 13 of them are located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong, Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Kashipur, Trichy and Udaipur. Rest six became operational in 2015. The new IIMs include Amritsar, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Bodhgaya, Sambalpur and Vishakhapatnam. Adding on to this list is now IIM Jammu.
