Mechanics of choosing the right internship

The next big thing after getting through a good college and completing the course is internship. Over the years, it has become a function of the networking of a candidate, rather than the skill he or she wants to acquire. The companies also seem to be taking interns like a formality and the projects given to them are usually labour intensive

 

Three management students Nitin Sonthalia and his batchmates will move to Bombay next month for a period of two months. They will join two professional services advisory firms at a Rs 50,000-per-month stipend. Although they were quite apprehensive about their job at start since their seniors have warned them at the beginning. But the lure of having the name of a renowned organization in CV was more than they can afford to lose since they want to join a financial consulting business in future.

 

In many of the B-schools and tech institutes Internships are not mandatory. Students are free to apply on their own and based on the reports made by the students, institutes approach the organisations for internship.

 

According to Chairperson of IIT, the students are not trained properly in some of the finance and consulting firms and that is why many of them have been blacklisted. The students join these firms since many don't like technical work and prefer crunching numbers. HR head for one of the consulting services said that they don't mind being blacklisted since they are an additional responsibility for not only the organisation but also for the mentors. Furthermore no one takes it seriously. He added that they keep receiving internship requests but since they visit the campus placements, they have to oblige them.

 

So before a student goes for internship it is advised that they should talk to their seniors and ask which organizations take them seriously. Munish Bhargava, placements chairperson at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade said that it is a student's decision where to pursue his/her internship and a place where the mentor is not interested it's a total waste. A the third-year computer science student at the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay, Pararth Shah will be going to Los Angeles for a two-month internship with Internet giant Google and will earn a six-figure stipend. He told the Hindustantimes, "The internship will give me exposure to latest technology, and software and product development. I am excited about visiting Silicon Valley and experiencing their lifestyle."

In another twist to the internship story, The Nissan Student Brand Manager (NSBM) programme is inviting applications from MBA aspirants across the country for a unique internship opportunity. Well known panelists like marketing guru Dr Nirmalya Kumar from the London business school who will select the student brand managers.
