After getting the exclusive info on IIM-Ahmedabad and IIFT interview rounds, we next caught up with a candidate who appeared for Personal Interaction (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) at Symbiosis International University (SIU) on February 15, 2014.
From this year onwards, SIU is conducting centralised admission process with a single personal interaction and writing ability test (PI-WAT) process for all MBA PGDM programs at multiple locations (Pune, NOIDA and Bengaluru campuses of SIU).
The candidate in question has scored 98.42 in SNAP (overall score including academics: 96.13) and got a call from SCHMRD. The person recently completed B Tech in (Mechanical) from IP University and is based out of Delhi-NCR.
Read a first person account of the candidate’s PI-WAT process:
The WAT
I took an overnight train from Delhi and reached Pune a day before the PI. My session was held on February 15, 2014. I reached the venue on time. After initial document verification, we were issued identity cards. Then there was a 20-minute presentation in an auditorium. About 80 candidates were present in that session. We then sat down for the essay test.
There were two essay topics:
- Women are now managing both office work and household chores. This has taken a toll on their happiness and health. Comment. (maximum word limit: 650)
- Comment on the picture. (A picture of Shiva’s half immersed statue during Uttarakhand flash floods- Refer link). (maximum word limit: 450)
Total time provided: 40 minutes for both essays.
Though the essay test went well, I think the time provided was not enough.
The PI
There were three persons in my panel: two senior guys, who asked all the technical questions, and a lady, who asked me HR related questions.
(After initial rounds of introduction)
Question (Q): Tell us about yourself.
Answer (A): (I introduced myself and spoke about academics and my project during undergraduation)
Q: Explain more about your project.
A: My project was on hydraulic clutch brake system. (I explained about it for five minutes)
Q: So now tell us about four-stroke engine and two-stroke engines.
A: (Explained the terms and the difference between the two correctly.)
Q: Explain the auto cycle of an engine with the help of a diagram.
A: (Drew the necessary diagram on the sheet provided and explained it)
Q: Very good. Now explain this diagram. (Interviewer quickly made a diagram on another sheet)
A: Sir, I have never seen this diagram before, but can explain it.
(The diagram was based on the previous diagram of auto cycle but spiral-shaped. I explained how the process starts and ends.)
Q: Good, now tell me what is a cam?
A: Cam converts a rotation motion to linear motion. It is used in exhaust wells. (See link for reference)
(Now the lady in the panel took over)
Q: Okay, so now it’s my turn to ask you questions. What motivates you?
A: Maths motivates me, because it says there is a solution to every problem.
Q: (Laughing) But I don’t know any maths.
A: (Laughing)
Q: You have mentioned about winning a college fest extempore? What was it on?
A: Ma’am, it was on FDI.
Q: So, let’s relieve that stage. Express your opinions once more.
A: (I spoke on the topic for about three minutes.)
Q: Okay. Now you can go. It was nice talking to you about automobile engines.
A: Same here, sir. Thank you.
The interview lasted for 15 minutes. They asked me many questions on automobile engineering. I had prepared well and answered all of them correctly. I also have interviews lined up for XLRI, XIMB and the new IIMs. Let’s see what happens.
