Why so many B-schools, engg colleges shutting down?
While the last decade saw mushrooming of technical institutes, professional education is going through a season of correction for the last two years. Since last year, about 225 B-schools and 52 engineering colleges have shut shop while many others have pruned the courses they offer to maintain their sustainability.
MBA education that once reigned supreme is not so attractive anymore for those in education business. According to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), 124 B-schools downed their shutters in 2011 and 101 others closed down this year. Similarly, 84 colleges decided to do away with their Master of Computer Application (MCA) course.
In Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan, however, more engineering colleges have come up than those that have chosen to close down.
In general, colleges in remote India as well as those offering poor-quality education are not being able to attract students. Yet, students are still bee-lining for top management and engineering colleges.
Lack of adequate faculty and no job offers are other reasons why these management and engineering colleges were shunned by students.
