NEET 2020: More than 21 candidates to compete for 1 MBBS seat

This year onwards, NEET will be the only entrance exam for MBBS admissions in all medical colleges of the country, including JIPMER and AIIMS. As per the NTA’s report, a total of 15, 93,452 candidates have registered for NEET 2020. In the upcoming medical entrance exam, NEET, more than 21 candidates will be competing for one MBBS seat.

According to the data shared by Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, Almost around 75,000 MBBS seats are available in India for the students who qualify NEET. The data is applicable to the first parliament session of the 17^th Lok Sabha which was held from June 17 to July 26. Also, the registration for NEET 2020 has increased by almost 15%. Last year around 15 lakh candidates registered for the examination. NEET 2020 will be held on May 3, and the registration figures ascertain the competitive level of the exam.

The only way to subside this competition is to increase the number of seats. However, the idea seems farfetched as the government announced to add 10,000 MBBS seats by 2020-2021 in the year 2014. The proposal of increasing the number of seats was taken relating to the Centre-sponsored scheme under which the funding pattern is 70:30 ratio between the central and state government. However, in this case, northeastern and special category states have an exception in funding pattern i.e. 90:10.  

According to an RTI reply, a shocking truth got unveiled, only 920 MBBS seats were added as against the promised 10,000 seats in the last five years. In February 2019, approval of establishing around 24 additional Government Medical Colleges for MBBS attached with existing district/referral hospitals by 2021 – 2022 was issued by the cabinet. These additional medical colleges will be set up in identified underserved areas of the country and would add around 8200 MBBS seats.
