Aiming for a profession which is not only your career but a way of life. Medical sciences as a profession give an opportunity to serve and save millions of lives and take a candidate to the heights of serving mankind. Candidates seeking to practice medicine in India are required to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Those who qualify NEET assessment have bright chances of getting admission to medical studies in Indian medical and dental colleges. Qualifying NEET will open up the doors for students and more chances of getting admission into medical and dental colleges of India. To help the candidates in their preparations, I bring to you a few tips and suggestions for NEET UG. The present article will guide the candidates about the essentials to qualify the entrance examination.

Know the Content

A candidate should be well-versed with syllabus before they start the preparation. Different sections and concepts that are in NEET syllabus should be under appropriate consideration. Time-division for every section is needed and this is possible only when the candidate is familiar with the syllabus and books.

Significant Books for NEET

Books are always reckoned as the best resources to qualify the competitive exam. Selecting the best books for the exam is also one of the important aspects to be looked upon. The material or the book you choose should be beneficial in clearing the fundamentals and basics. Medical council of India has suggested few books which can also be considered as an effective tool to prepare for NEET. Three subjects need to be prepared thoroughly. For physics, different coaching institutes and experts suggest various books but the important one are “Concept of Physics” by H.C. Verma; “Objective Physics” by DC Pandey; “Fundamentals of Physics” by Halliday, Resnick and walker. Same way books for chemistry also need to be selected with the utmost care. Few books which I would suggest are ABC of Chemistry for Classes 11 and 12 by Modern Concise Inorganic Chemistry by JD Lee and Dinesh Chemistry Guide. The third main domain that is biology is equally important to qualify NEET exam. Suggested NEET books by various experts are “Objective Botany” by Ansari, “Pradeep Guide” on Biology and “GRB Bathla publications for Biology”.

What to Study for NEET

There is always a question of deciding what to prepare and up to what extent it needs to be prepared. Previous year paper analysis gives you an idea about the chapter-wise weightage. This analysis also gives you an idea about the important topics and the marks associated with the topic. For all the three subjects that is Physics, Chemistry and Biology a candidate need focus on the syllabus covering both the grades that is Class 11^th and 12^th. Each chapter given in the syllabus of both the classes has its weightage. An approximate estimation has been discussed in this article about the weightage of a chapter in the whole syllabus (means out of 100 percent). Based on the weightage discussed a candidate can prioritise the chapter/topic to be focused more and chapter/topic to be focused less. In Class 11^th, there are total ten chapters for Physics and their weightage have been mentioned inside the bracket (after the name of the chapter). Chapters of Class 11^th Physics are named as: Physical world and measurement(2%), Kinematics(3%), Laws Of Motion(3%), Work energy and power(4%), Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body(5%), Gravitation(2%), Properties of Bulk Matter(3%), Thermodynamics(9%), Behavior of Perfect Gas and Kinetic Theory(3%), Oscillation and waves(3%). Same way if I talk about the syllabus of physics of class 12^th, there are total of nine chapters/ topic. These chapters along with their weightage are as follows: Electrostatics(9%), Current Electricity(8%), Magnetic Effect of Current and Magnetism(5%), Electromagnetic Induction & Alternating Current(8%), Electromagnetic Waves(5%), Optics(10%), Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation(6%), Atoms and Nuclei(3%), electronic devices (9%).

Now coming to the next important part that is Chemistry for Class 11^th. There are fourteen chapters that are considered to be important qualify NEET exam. The chapters along with their weightage are Basic concepts of chemistry (1%), Structure of atom (2%), Classification of elements and periodicity in properties (2%), Chemical bonding and Molecular structure(5%), States of Matter: Gases and liquid(2%), Thermodynamics (8%), Equilibrium(6%), Redox reaction (3%), Hydrogen(3%), S block elements (2%), P block elements (2%), Organic Chemistry basic principles and techniques(4%), Hydrocarbons(3%), Environmental chemistry (2%). Likewise if I talk about the important chapters of chemistry covered under the syllabus of class 12 these are: Solid-state(2%), Solutions (5%), Electrochemistry (2%), Chemical Kinetics(3%), Surface chemistry (2%), Isolation of elements (2%), p-block elements(5%), d and f block elements (4%), Coordination compounds (9%), Haloalkanes and haloaranes(3%), Alcohols, phenols and Ethers(4%), Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids(4%), Organic Compounds containing Nitrogen(2%), Biomolecules(3%),Polymers(3%) and chemistry in daily life(2%).

Now talking about the most complex subject that is Biology. The Class 11^th syllabus has been divided into five broad parts, each having different chapters. Here it is a bit difficult to talk about the weightage of each chapter specifically but the pattern of NEET exam suggests the weightage to be given for each part of the syllabus for both Class 11^th and 12^th. These categories are Diversity of living organisms (14%), Structural Organization in Plants & Animals (5%), Structure and function (9%), Plant physiology (6%), Human physiology (20%).
