Bihar CM Nitish Kumar expresses concern on expensive medical education in India

Apart from other economical concerns amid the ongoing Russia and Ukraine war, one issue which has come to the light in this situation is that many Indian medical students are going to countries like Ukraine to pursue medical education. Now, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also expressed concern over the costly medical education in India and said that he was not aware of Indian medical students going to Ukraine in such large numbers.

"In our country, students have to pass competitive examinations for selection in medical colleges, while in Ukraine, no such exam is required. This is a new revelation in the wake of Russia-Ukraine war," he said.

"I also learnt that medical studies in Ukraine costs much less. If it is true, then it calls for a discussion at the national level," he added, as reported by Ahmedabad Mirror.

He said that the private medical colleges in India charge more than INR 1 crore as a fee for undergraduate medical courses and in Ukraine, the same MBBS course costs somewhere between INR 20 lakh to INR 25 lakh.

The middle-class families who struggle to send their children overseas to study get the required information through social media and they send their children to Ukraine to pursue medical courses, he added.
